Programme Development | 2004 - 2006
Thirteen young Mexican playwrights from all parts of the country took part in the first workshop led by the Royal Court writers Simon Stephens and April De Angelis, and all completed the first drafts of their new plays in December 2004. Elyse Dodgson, the then International Director of the Royal Court, Simon Stephens and director Roxana Silbert returned to Mexico City for a second workshop to continue the development of the plays. This was followed by a third workshop with the writers in June 2005 led by Roxana Silbert, Indhu Rubasingham and Elyse Dodgson, during which the works were further developed with a group of young directors eager to find new ways of working on new plays.
The workshop process ended with five staged readings at the Centro Cultural Helénico in December 2005 of a final selection of the most promising of the thirteen plays, followed by readings at the Royal Court in London in January 2006. Six of the Mexican writers were invited to London for these readings.
One of the plays, On Insomnia and Midnight, by Edgar Chias, was chosen to be staged in a co-production with the Festival Internacional Cervantino and the Royal Court, and was presented in October 2006 at the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs and subsequently in Mexico during the Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato and in the Centro Cultural Helénico in Mexico City.
