In August of 2005, The Anglo Mexican Foundation, in collaboration with government cultural institutions and private sponsors, launched the MexArt programme to promote contemporary Mexican performing and visual arts in the United Kingdom, as well as to encourage a bilateral artistic collaboration and launch these Mexican artists into the competitive international arts market.
In its initial years, MexArt focused primarily on participating in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, successfully showcasing Mexican contemporary theatre productions that resulted in subsequent international tours. Gradually the programme extended beyond theatre to present a wider range of artistic disciplines. Looking back through the years, MexArt has covered a broad spectrum of cultural activities from Mexico, which include not only drama, but music, dance, comedy, children’s theatre, literature, traditional handicrafts and exhibits.
